Symbol of Grief Pin Acknowledges Death and Loss

May 6, 2010
To acknowledge the powerful and life-changing experience of death, two sisters, Kelly and Michele McBride, designed the Universal Grieving Symbol in 2005 after the death of the of their youngest sister Shannon.  Inspired by traditional symbolism and nature, along with the fact that no such symbol existed, they realized that a symbol was needed to validate loss and to open the doors for communication about a topic that is currently silenced in today's society.
The sisters created the Universal Grieving Symbol lapel pin for anyone to wear when they miss their loved one.  It can also be worn to acknowledge the passage of time, like an anniversary or birthday.  Kelly and Michele hope that their symbol, and the inspirational gifts accompanying it, will help anyone who has experienced grief remember that they are not alone.
